Recent reports in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada have indicated that the annual number of mesothelioma deaths is increasing. Mesothelioma is a rare but deadly form of lung cancer related to asbestos exposure. Exposure is often result of working in an industry, such as the insulation or automotive, which uses asbestos in manufacture or production. Because mesothelioma usually manifests 20 to 40 years after the first exposure, many reported cases derive from asbestos exposure that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s.

According to calculations by the Center for Disease Control, mesothelioma deaths are expected to peak around 2010 in the United States whereas in the United Kingdom, the Health and Safety Executive predicted mesothelioma cases would continue to rise until 2016. The Canadian government reported mesothelioma cases shot up 67 percent in the last 15 years. The number of mesothelioma cases amoung women is reported to rise as well, despite that men are more likely to develop the cancer.

The increase in mesothelioma cases is due to asbestos exposure that occurred 20 to 40 years ago. Once diagnosed, cancer patients have a grim prognosis, many only living for a few months. Additionally, asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma, which points to an occupational or environmental hazard present in the patients’ lives prior to diagnosis.

Although optimism remains that the number of the cases is expected to decline as the residual impact of asbestos use subsides, asbestos-related diseases are debilitating and often the result of inadvertent exposure via an occupational hazard. Plumbers, electricians and electrical fitters, carpenters, and heating and ventilating engineers are the professions who run the risk of developing a disease related to asbestos according to reports in UK. However many death certificates do not record occupations of the patients dying from mesothelioma.

The slightest asbestos exposure can result in several potentially fatal medical conditions, including lung cancer, asbestosis or mesothelioma, despite the decrease in the commercial use of asbestos. Many who have been exposed to mesothelioma can seek compensation for costly medical bills with a mesothelioma lawsuit.

Mesothelioma litigation has risen in recent years as the population that was exposed to asbestos earlier in the twentieth century continues to age and the negative effects of asbestos become more prevalent. Mesothelioma treatment can be intense and expensive, which is why many mesothelioma patients seek mesothelioma legal counsel from experienced mesothelioma law firms. Although asbestos exposure has dropped in recent years, those exposed prior to the twenty-first century continue to suffer from the side effects.

Mesothelioma is an insidious form of cancer because of the fact it is often discovered so late that treatment options are simply non-existent. For many people, the only option is to consider clinical trials. The question is whether this is a good option.

What are clinical trials? They are testing periods for new drugs or procedures that may eventually prove effective and be approved by the FDA as a treatment for something. Put another way, they are the process of testing whether a drug or procedure does what it is intended to do. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t.

Mesothelioma is a brutally difficult cancer to deal with for a unique reason. The problematic characteristic is it is very hard to find until it is too late for the patient. A person can have the cancer for 10, 20 or 30 years during which it can be treated, but still die of it because it went undetected. Given this problem, there are many different clinical trials going on all the time devoted to Mesothelioma treatments. For example, one related to the Mesomark, which is a promising new blood test that can lead to early detection.

Is it safe to take part in clinical trials? Generally, the answer is that it is safe to do so. A drug company does not just produce a drug and then start testing it on people. It must undergo testing and vetting processes before that happens. Still, clinical trials are undisputedly a form of experiment. The researchers think the drug or procedure being tested will work, but aren’t sure. This is, after all, why they have not been approved as of yet. The downside is usually just ineffectiveness, but side effects and rarely even death can occur.

Should you submit to clinical trials if you have Mesothelioma? The decision is entirely up to you. A late stage diagnosis of Mesothelioma is very often fatal, so there may be little choice.

When I was 14 I lost my grandpa, grandma, and aunt, who collectively had played nearly as large a role in raising me as my parents, all within the span of about 7 months. Right around the time they passed away, my parents were both diagnosed with cancer. My father’s cancer was terminal(Mesothelioma). My mother, however, had liver cancer, and remission was still possible. After I had turned 15, they both passed away. My father went first, and my mother passed about 3 weeks afterwards. I had to go live with my aunt, which caused a host of other problems for me(Imagine 2 depressed people, one with the raging hormones and mood swings of adolescence, and the other with menopausal symptoms, and a generation gap of nearly 40 years). We argued constantly for the 4 years that I had to live with her. Now I am 19 years old, and I have moved out. However, I’m now starting to miss my parents for, what I believe to be, the first time. I never really grieved over them while I was living with my aunt. Is it possible that my mind pushed grieving for my parents to the back of my mind while I struggled with my aunt? Lately I have had many bouts of crying, extreme loneliness, more frequent panic attacks, which started around the same time my parents got sick, and I generally don’t get any enjoyment out of the things that used to make me happy. I saw many social workers, psychiatrists, etc. while I was living with my aunt, and I had been diagnosed with major depression, and I am now showing similar symptoms. Please cite your resources, and if you have any advice for dealing with depression(besides taking medication, because apparently the psychiatrists around here don’t believe in medicine) please post that as well. Thank you.

Just what is mesothelioma? Well, if you have worked around asbestos, this is definitely a question you should be asking.

Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the mesothelium – the protective lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs.

The cancer cells causes thickening of the membranes that protects the organs – hence impairing the functions of the organs.

The heart, abdominal area and lungs are the of the most common areas affected by this cancer. There have also been reported cases of testicular mesothelioma – but this is extremely rare.

What Is Mesothelioma – Symptoms.

People who have this cancer have reported:

Abdominal pain
Back pain
Change in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea)
Coughing up blood
Difficulty breathing
Fever
Fluid buildup between the chest wall and lungs
Hoarseness
Lumps under the skin
Night sweating
And more

What Is Mesothelioma – High Risk Groups

In the vast majority of the cases, this rare form of cancer affects people who have been exposed to asbestos in the workplace. Asbestos miners, construction workers, industrial workers, World War II and Vietnam war navy veterans and shipyard workers are some of the high risk groups for mesothelioma.

Those who live with people in these high groups are also at risk. It is advisable therefore that people who work around asbestos change their clothes and have a shower prior to going to their homes.

What Is Mesothelioma – Treatment

Here is a rule of thumb, if you have worked around asbestos, make sure you have your physician check you out for mesothelioma.

As mentioned before, mesothelioma symptoms can take many many years to surface. Therefore, early detection is the key to surviving this disease.

If you find out that you have the disease, surgery, radiation and chemo are the standard treatment options.

There are lots more about this disease to discuss.

Mesothelioma, also known as asbestos cancer, is cancer of the mesothelium, and is usually found on or around the lungs. Symptoms of this disease are similar to those of many other conditions including lung cancer, so be certain to check with your physician if you note these potential mesothelioma symptoms in yourself or a loved one.

If you have been exposed to asbestos or are close to someone who has, it is important to be aware of the symptoms of this cancer so that you can seek the appropriate mesothelioma treatment.

These 8 symptoms may not appear for decades after the initial asbestos exposure:

- Shortness of Breath caused by fluid trapped between the lungs and the chest wall.

- Chest Pains also caused by fluid trapped between the lung and the chest wall, creating pressure that a patient will feel as chest pains under the rib cage and/or be accompanied by coughing. These are often the first mesothelioma symptoms that patients are aware of, occurring long before the others.

- Weight Loss is often associated with cancerous tumors, particularly if the tumors are older.

- Abdominal Pain and/or Swelling resulting from fluid buildup in the abdomen.

- Bowel Obstruction can be another complication resulting from fluid buildup in the abdomen causing complications with the digestive tract and associated organs. Tumors that form in the abdominal region can cause this symptom as well.

- Anemia can be a result of mesothelioma affecting the tissue lining the lungs and the chest cavity, the pleura.

- Blood Clotting Abnormalities are only seen in severe cases of mesothelioma.

- Trouble Swallowing: If the asbestos cancer (mesothelioma) has metastasized from the mesothelioma to other parts of the body, trouble swallowing can occur.

- Swelling in the Neck or Face: These are also symptoms that will be seen if the mesothelioma has moved to other parts of the body besides the mesothelium.

While this list of symptoms is extensive, there is no way to determine whether or not you will need mesothelioma treatment without consulting a doctor. Although you may seek mesothelioma information from any doctor, oncologists specializing in asbestos cancer are trained to identify and treat this particular disease.

Life threatening diseases such as those caused by asbestos should always be looked at by a trained oncologist.

My dad remarried again when my birth mother died in 2000, My stepmother was not fair to me and my siblings, she treated her kids better, our father was always on the road, he was a truck driver. My stepmother has always been a thief, she once got caught stealing a pair of pants and turtle candy from wal mart and they press charges, she went to jail for 3 months….My father died in 2005 from mesothelioma and I moved out right away, because I was sick and tired of my stepmother, but we recently found out that she is still getting my father’s SSI checks and cashing them, he been dead for 5 years now….I’m wondering how can I find out if this is true, so I can put her in jail. We also was told that their will be an compensation, because my father passed away from an asbestos-related disease, I’m almost 100% positive that the money might go to our stepmother and her kids….Do anyone know how that works?? I’m just in a tough situation and I want her put in jail, because 3 months was not long enough!!! Any advice will be appreciated!! Thanks
